About Us

Childhood friends and super-Anglophiles, Sally Helm and Susie Pryor, first opened Brits in a small side-street in the historic downtown shopping area of Lawrence, Kansas in the summer of 1995. Sally had just returned from a trip to England that she describes as a life-changing experience. She wanted to bring back and surround herself with a taste of the things she loved so much in the UK. Susie was working on her master’s degree in business at the time so they teamed up and the idea for Brits was born. The biggest challenge getting started was convincing friends, family and, of course, the bankers that it was a good idea.

Now, 20 years later, Brits is still thriving. They outgrew their small side street location and moved to a larger storefront on the main street in 1997, and then again, up the street to their current location in 2003.

Sally says running Brits never gets old and she’s never bored being surrounded by British things and British people each day. Nothing makes her or her employees happier than witnessing what they like to call “Brits Moments;” when an expat walks into the shop and is overjoyed to find items that remind them of home. Her commitment to personal customer service extends to Brits online store as well. Brits doesn’t have a large distribution center and at Brits you’re not a number, you’re a name. Customers are welcome to call and speak to a real person or email us at any time with questions or concerns.
